This course is for groups of up to 5 Learners taught in our virtual classroom via Zoom (additional learners £25 per person)

 

This vital course teaches what epilepsy is and the necessary skills required to look after a child with this condition. You will learn how to provide any additional day to day support which might be required, as well as learning how to respond in an emergency situation.

You will be taught about the different types of epilepsy.

Students will learn how to understand the impact they each can have on individual children and how to ensure that children with epilepsy are included in all appropriate activities and how to carry out a risk assessment.

The course will explore the various medication programmes children may be prescribed and the impact these may have.

The theoretical components of administrating emergency medication will be covered during the training course.

Description

By the end of the session students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an awareness of what Epilepsy is and recognition of different seizure types
  • List some factors that influence how epilepsy affects a child
  • Recognise possible trigger factors
  • Be able to support an adult/ children/young person experiencing seizures, ensuring their safety and dignity
  • Demonstrate awareness of the importance of observing and recording seizure activity
  • Describe some safety measures that can be taken in order to keep children with epilepsy safe
  • Understand the need for balancing risk and achieving a quality of life
  • Be able to undertake a risk assessment for a child with epilepsy
  • Create an individual healthcare plan (IHP) for a child with epilepsy
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the epilepsy emergency management plan
  • List some barriers to inclusion
  • Support parents/family members in understanding the condition
